What is whiplash?
A whiplash injury occurs due to excessive or sudden rotation, hyperflexion or hyperflexion of the neck causing neck pain and other symptoms.

A whiplash injury is most commonly occurring from car collisions; however, it can occur from driving or other activities or mishaps.
The impact may result in soft-tissue or bony injuries which may develop into several clinical conditions, also known as whiplash-associated disorders (WAD).
What are the symptoms
Neck pain referring into shoulder or arm and headaches are the most common symptoms resulting from a whiplash.
Other signs and symptoms:
- Muscular spams
- Stiffness
- Deafness
- Reduced movement of the neck
- Tinnitus
- Nausea and trouble swallowing
- Dizziness, fatigue and sleep disturbance
- TMJ pain
- Visual disturbances
Prognosis
40% of people see some reduction in symptoms by 6 weeks.
50% of people notice substantial improvement and 40% of people notice a complete resolution by 12 weeks.
Management after being assessed by a healthcare provider
If you have been cleared for any serious injuries, ensure you make an early return to your normal activities and mobilization of your neck.
Avoid using neck collars as this limits movement and may lead to deconditioning of the neck.
Trial analgesia to manage symptoms.
Consider referral to physiotherapy and psychologist.
